I have sqlserver 2008 server on 32 bit.. and planning to upgrade to sqlserver 2008 R2..
Please advise the steps to upgrade from 2008 to R2 on same server.

Backup/restore is what I would use.
If you want the steps on how to do an upgrade, please google it as this topic has been documented countless times already. No need to write them out here.
