i have been given user credentials and IP address to create
a linked server toi work with a clients server.
but could I just login just using ssms as you would
with a server on site.

when do you have to insert servername then port number ie servername/2044

i have had to do that before

when the SQL Server is configured to listening on that port instead of the default port no

or the remote server may be behind a firewall and that is the port no configured in the firewall for access
