I'm trying to find out what date SQL Server 2008 R2 was released (in the UK) i.e. the first day you could buy a licence for it.

According to the fount of all knowledge (sic.) Wikipedia, it was released to manufacturing on April 21st 2010 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_SQL_Server#SQL_Server_2008_R2

However the support lifecycle begins on July 20th 2010 http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?c2=1044

Does anyone know how I can find out more precisely please, I am assuming that the support start date is a good indication but is probably tied to a service pack

RTM and General availability are 2 different things. RTM is usually a month or 2 before GA, so this seems about right.

Mainstream Support is always at least 10 years from GA, and 2 years from the last service pack.

Thanks Chad.

It's suprisingly tricky to find the actual date it seems but the information I have seems to be near enough for what we want

cheers
