Hi,

Do we need license to install sql server 2008 r2 standard edition on dev box to use as dev or test server?

Yes , a license is required for SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard.

Have you looked into the Developer's Edition of SQL Server? The cost is minimal but you can't use it on your production machines.

do you have any other licensing in place ? That may possibly cover this SQL Server license. For example , if you have Enterprise Edition licening that may cover a host
