Forgive me if this is a stupid question.

We get requests at work to perform database backups because the users are going to attempt something critical (financial databases, rolling month end, that sort of thing).

Ok, highlight the database, right-click / Tasks / Backup.

We have had it impressed upon us that "Copy-only backup" MUST be ticked otherwise the entire wrath of Satan will come raining down on us and if there's a disaster then everything goes to rat-shit.

My company do log shipping (WTF that means).

Can anyone illuminate me? Surely if you back your database up, it's backed up?

Thank you for your patience with this newbie.

Did you check MSDN documentation for Copy-only backups

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191495.aspx

it clearly explains about it and its purpose
