Hello Every1,
I see there are a lot of SQL gurus in this forum and just curious
I have heard of few comments such as, we put the smaller dbs on SQL server and the larger ones on oracle and DB2
Whats the size of the largest db you have worked with ?

Yeah, besides, its not how big it is it's how you use it...(it ain't the meat, it's the motion)
btw, I hear that if you SET FIPS_FLAGGER too often you could go blind.
We don't have what I consider to be huge databases we do have a lot of databases though. Our largest is about 30 gig.

80GB+

The largest tables go 30 mil rows+ and 40 columns+

Probably. But I can give some numbers, and keep a neutral stance on the subject
What is the reason for this question Afrika, is it to justify/compare SQL Server abilities contra Oracle & DB2 at you shop ?

| I worked with one that was well over 100 gig at my last job, and that was after the data in it was pulled out of another database with 75 gigs of its own data. Gotta love lawyers wanting to keep "notes" historically *and* keep it live and accessible. |

We have many inside MS that are > 100GB - one that I've worked with is 1.6TB. CHECKDB of it in SQL Server 2005 on an 8-way with a kick-ass IO system ran in under 7 hours (we made CHECKDB faster and scale better than SQL2k even though it does more checks!)

I just had a silly @$$ at one of our sub-contacted Warehouse’s Try to tell me they needed to use oracle because the Db was larger than 5GB. (Must have been looking at the old SLQ desktop specs or something). Then after he said something about my website. I found out he was using a old G3 Mac “the best computer ever made” God This guy is so stupid I wana Puke!

Verizon uses SQL Server 2005 and they have around 4TB in a single database. There were a lot of people at PASS 2005 that had databases in the terabytes. Largest I've ever worked with was around 1GB though.

Yup - spent a couple of weeks with them last spring. They have a much larger volume of data on DB2 mainframes.

I don't know exactly what part they store in there, I suspect it's their data warehouse. Perhaps Paul can give us some information. I believe they don't mind sharing it as I've heard their numbers at 2 different conferences now.
Verizon is a huge cellular company here. Both my personal and work cell phone are through them.

The biggest here is a 78GB database. According to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Performance Tuning, it is barely a medium size database. Besides. It is largely image data.
Overall, though, I have to watch over some 278 databases totaling 386GB over 46 servers. Some day we will consolidate. If ever someone gives up a budget.
I still don't think we are scratching the suface of SQL Server performance. |

Different sort of "Gig" I think Brett!
We try to keep all our databases under 5GB - less effort to get right then! So we purge stale data relentlessly. (Actually we BCP it out to "Native" files, and then delete, so that we can pull it into a "temp" database if needed - it almost never is)
