I considered recommending your script but misread sysfiles as sys.files and thought it was 2005 specific. Also, I don't know if this is 2005 specific, but I believe that shrinkfile is not a single transaction - an abort midway through does not undo page movements. Dunno if that prevents the file actually shrinking though... Thought I would mention as your intro suggests otherwise |

The script works with 2000 or 2005. The reason I developed it is to be able to shrink databases with large amounts of free space in small increments.
I originally posted it for a guy who had a 200 GB database with only 80 GB used and was having trouble shrinking it. It's set to shink by just 50 MB at a time, so it takes a while, but it just keeps on going and eventually gets done. Of course, you may want to do some reindexing when finishes.
Sorry for hijacking a thread dedicated to complaining about twits to try to help someone.

Thanks, chaps!

I feel so sheepish now...in any case, I don't think it was ever mentioned that it's not data related
And if space is an issue, why retain another monster on disk that's not being used?
I just don't...But I do like your script

I started to register at dbforumns, but quit when they asked for my birthday.
I don't see that as any of their business, unless there's some adult content unsuitable for under 18.

I could register as Connor Macleod, born in 1518.
What RDMS does that site run on? MySQL?

Most of his posts are like that. I got stuck with him on couple of other posts. I saw you were waging a lone battle. Wanted to help but I figured you have enough xperience here to handle such requests

Every time he posts an "explanation", it somehow makes the requirements even less clear and he manages to introduce new, unclear requirements.
I think a lot of the people that post here need to master written communications before they take on SQL. It’s really two sides of the same problem; they can’t communicate requirements to people or computers. Fundamentally, they don’t have the requirements clear in their own minds, so it’s impossible to communicate something they don’t understand.
