I am currently helping a bloke out on msdn forums. When I asked him about what existing indexes he had on the tables, he answered "I have the XXX column which "indexes" the rows. He means the XXX column is unique. And his performance problem is that a 3,000,000 row table is joined against a 500,000 row table...

Somewhere in SQLTeam history I remember seeing a response "Let's begin with the assumption you don't know what you're talking about...." It got worse from there.
