The problem is, i agree with Joe on this one. (Except for NEVER use a cursor.)
However, this being a helpful site, i do not post such things. I just yell at my monitor instead.
...

"You need to study RDBMS for about a year before you post again" is really not very helpful.

Maybe he could just say "You need to buy all my books and read them." and let it go at that.

Hence my statement that i do NOT post such things.

Any time i have a REAL answer, either the problem is SO simple everyone else ignored it, or Peter or Madhi or Corey have already coded the problem 9235 different ways.

Or Rob types faster than me and gets in the answer

However, i agree with your solution.

I am currently helping a bloke out on msdn forums. When I asked him about what existing indexes he had on the tables, he answered "I have the XXX column which "indexes" the rows.
He means the XXX column is unique. And his performance problem is that a 3,000,000 row table is joined against a 500,000 row table...

That may not be his only problem

I think he just doesn't realise how confusing he was making it.

Being confused and being confusing seem to go together.

If you don't really understand what you want to do how can you explain it to someone else?

Somewhere in SQLTeam history I remember seeing a response "Let's begin with the assumption you don't know what you're talking about...." It got worse from there.

There are several regular posters (here and at SSC) where that would be a valid start for any reply.
