I have just installed SQL Server Express 2012 on a Win 7 32 bit Home Premium platform with no problems during install. During the installation I was not prompted for any names for Servers or instances.
When I start Management Studio and attempt to connect I am required to provide a Server name.
I have read many blogs on this subject and have tried the machine name and get an error 2.
I have attempted to start SQL services using run - 'services.msc -> enable all sql services'. There are no 'SQL' services listed or running in either Standard or Extended. This could be the reason for no server connection. HELP!

If you don't see something like "SQL Server(SQLExpress)" in services.msc, that means you did not install the server. SQL Server has different components - some of those install just the management studio (for people who want to connect to servers on other computers), rather than the server component. This might be what happened to you. What did you install - i.e., where did you download the SQL Express from, and which specific msi or exe?
