Can anyone tell me what the grant permissions would be to give a user permissions to use a linked server and to see the catalog on it?

Thanks

I'm not sure that linked servers are sophisticated enough, but they can connect to the actual server behind the linked server to see the catalog.

OK, thanks, going to need a rethink on this one as the user needs to see the fields in the tables/views on the linked server and not just blindly select * from tablename.

They could query the INFORMATION_SCHEMA views through the linked server.
