Can a SQL server 2005 db be backed up and restored on a SQL Server 2008 db ?

Yes it is possible. In fact, it's one of the easiest ways to upgrade your databases to the newer version.

It is not possible to backup on a higher version and restore on a lower version though.

I would be installing SQL Server 2008 in my machine and was collecting the inventory of databases. I need to try it tonight.

Sql2k8 client tools don't like previous versions of sql, need to install them on machine without other version of sql.
