Take some time to find that there's a lot of dedicated people on this forum. If you buy a new game... it takes time to get good at it. This forum is like that. After some time you'll find that responses improve after making better questions .

I like this site and this forum, check the Weblogs too, there's a lot of knowledge to be found...

I appreciate their time in trying to answer the question, but I don't think the responders quite understood the business requirement... The responses were not helpful in any practical way.

In terms of issues with this forum:
1) responses are a bit slow
2) quality of responses are variable (i read through a sampling of posts to gauge expertise)

I think this forum is the best one I could find, I was just fishing to see if anyone knew of a better one - even if it is paid...

I'm pretty sure the poster didn't find the above helpful. The responder didn't warn that using LIKE in a query with a significant amount of data may lead to performance issues. The responder didn't point out that the way the poster was structuring their data was unsound. Grant it, the post had a lot of blanks, but still...

Also - I saw another post where someone asked - can you migrate from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005... the only response was 'YES'... The poster probably wanted to be pointed in the direction of, ok how is it done and what are the potential issues...

Most questions here are answered within 6 minutes.

If you look at the last 20 or so topics, the span of time for useful replies is not 6 minutes... I would consider 24 hours good time for a meaningful answer on a forum. Maybe the sampling I took was bad, but it sure doesn't look like answers get resolved in 6 minutes...

You are throwing up a straw-man... I never said follow-up questions are not bad. I said the answers were less than optimal.

If you take questions from newbs, you have to understand that they probably don't even know enough to ask the right question. That's why I find it objectionable to steer them down a path without fully understanding what they are trying to do.

Yes I know. I am the one offering the suggestion.
I think that is much more helpful than forcing OP to rewrite application, especially when whe already have posted what she has come up with this far.

And you Department / SubDepartment tables? What are they for?
Is not a hierarchy table (DepartmentID, ParentDepartmentID) a better way to go?

They DO NOT know what they are doing in some cases. That's the problem.
They are given homework and didn't pay to much attention in class, or are given a task to solve and are not competent enough.
That's mostly the bottom line.

If they have started on a solution, why make them rewrite everything and completely take their self-esteem down, when a suggestion or solution can be made with existing environment? Even if it is not the "correct" environment...

Peso - I'm not trying to cut on you or this forum. I find it amazing that people are generous enough to offer free assistance.

As a new user, I was inquiring if there were other forums that people used as well.

Also in regard to the post about dept/subdept/etc... The poster indicated that they were in SCHEMA DESIGN - that means that they are at the beginning. The structure I offered is a possible way to normalize the schema. I don't know the poster's full requirements, so I offered caveats with my suggestion.

You said that response time is 6 minutes, and I gave you some clear examples of - no it's not 6 minutes.

You forget the little "most" before. Which mean most question are answered within 6 minutes.
Like an average if you want to.

It also means some question have an response time over 6 minutes. In the first topic you provided a link for, my response was about 40 minutes.

You take things too personally Peso.

Have you worked with high-end dbas - there is a reason they make $150-400/hr? The knowledge/skills exhibited here are novice-intermediate. I include myself in the novice category. The difference is that I realize that I'm a novice and I'm cool with that. You think your skillz be better than they are...

Volunteered time is valuable and it's great that people are trying to help eachother. You shouldn't take it personally that someone critiques the forum.

There is not much you can do about the response times - it's no one's job to answer questions, but more highly trafficked sites generally get speedier responses.

Constructive criticism was offered in that it's bad to lead newbs down a path, just so that you can write a post. It's better to reject the post as needing more information. I think there are people who post here who are trying to do work. I also see that sometimes the answers offered are suboptimal at best...

The site would get more traffic if people wrote better answers and more people came here for answers, which in turn would lead to more frequent, and perhaps higher quality responses.

well the 4 most popular/most visited sql forums are in the descending order are probably:
1. sql server central
2. sql team
3. sql server performance
4. db forums

so you might try your luck there

Dude, you aren't so smart yourself. I've never said much to Peso, but I've read many of his responses in the past and he's one smart cookie. Many of the others on here are as well.
