I have a report on the ReportServer that I need to copy to my local computer. It was not saved in SourceSafe. Is there a way to get the .rdl file for that report copied to my computer from the ReportServer?
I have googled the topic but no sites come close to what I want.

Thanks in advance!

You won't find them there. They get stored inside the ReportServer database in SQL Server. So you need to grab the rdl files from your source control or developer machine.

So if they are not in Source Control and no longer on the developer machine then they cannot be retrieved at all? That is the situation I am running into.

I do not know if you can export the rdl from the ReportServer database. I'd suggest contacting Microsoft on that or googling for export options.

It is easy .....
Go to Report on Report Manager, Click properties of report, under the report definition you will see Edit and Update link...if you click on Edit you can open or Save the RDL files.

I haven't tried nsaini's way yet. Other than what you see in this posting I have nothing new to report. I ended up having to recreate the reports.

Actually you have to click Show details and edit the report.

Thank you to NSAINI! At least the answer was posted for those of us that encounter the same problem and are googling for answers! (even if it may not have helped the original poster in time, it did help us!)

For SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services

Go to Report on Report Manager
Click properties of Report
Select Download on the top right corner
Now you can open or Save the RDL files

For 2008 Reporting Services I would suggest this:

Mouse over a report and you'll see a dropdown.

Click the dropdown and click "Manage"

In the upper menu select "Download"

Click "Save" on the dialog to save the RDL file

I'm running into the same issue (SSRS 2005) where I need to make edits to an .rdl report.
I don't have Report Manager since SSRS is running in Sharepoint ... I can access http://localhost/reportserver (which shows me the .rdl file) but when I click on it, the report runs; it doesn't give me the option to edit ...

Any idea how to overcome this?

I'm sure you've already moved on, but in case google brings anyone else here, probably the simplest solution in this scenario would be to go to the SharePoint Document Library where the reports are stored and open it up in Explorer view/mode; there are all your rdl files.

Be sure you disable automatically detect settings in LAN Settings in Internet Options, Connections tab or it will be SLOOOOWWW.

Even if you don't use Explorer mode, you will still be able to d/l the rdl files from the doc library.

Hope this helps,
Larry
