| Hello -We had our Sql 2005 database server restart early this morning. I checked the logs on the server and the Windows event logs, but I cannot see anything that provides a clear reason why the server might have restarted. There is some thought that a long running query caused an issue with the database transaction log filling up, but I cannot even find evidence of that. Does anyone know of something else I can check? Thanks, - will |

| A long running query will not cause a server to restart nor will a full transaction log. If the restart was expected, then you will find an unexpected error message in Event Viewer. Is that the case?Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/Subscribe to my blog |

| Hi - Thanks for the info. And, the server restart happened again a few minutes ago.The only thing in the Event Viewer is this: The previous system shutdown at 10:26:26 AM on 7/1/2008 was unexpected.I am wondering now if there is some sort of system/hardware issue going on.Thanks, - will |

| Do, you have antivirus installed on the server. Also check to see if you have windows update on and might have caused the restarts..Check Windows Schedular.. Did you update any drivers etc on the box.. Are there any similarities between these two restarts.?ManinderDatabase Painter.. Leaving strokes, that amaze! and inreturn, put value to your Work. | Reboot caused by windows update will not log message of 'The previous system shutdown was unexpected'. Check event logs to see if have any error before rebooting. |

Hi -Thanks for the continued suggestions and thoughts. Our Server's Windows Update is currently set to update automatically at 3am. All of the server restarts have been at other times, not 3am. There does seem to be a pattern emerging, at least for the last few times, where a series of batch jobs are running (SSIS packages running in the evening to load data or similar procedured run manually during the day) and then the SQL Server (and Windows Event Viewer) logs report a series of errors like:Event Type: InformationEvent Source: MSSQLSERVEREvent Category: (2)Event ID: 833Date: 7/6/2008Time: 9:13:00 PMUser: N/AComputer: CSORPTDescription:SQL Server has encountered 2844 occurrence(s) of I/O requests taking longer than 15 seconds to complete on file [C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\Reporting.mdf] in database [Reporting] (7). The OS file handle is 0x0000000000000A24. The offset of the latest long I/O is: 0x000001804a0000Data:0000: 41 03 00 00 0a 00 00 00 A.......0008: 07 00 00 00 43 00 53 00 ....C.S.0010: 4f 00 52 00 50 00 54 00 O.R.P.T.0018: 00 00 00 00 00 00 ...... We are running the 64-bit version of SQL 2005 Enterprise.I did some research and found some things that are recommended (Enabling Lock Pages in Memory, for one) and even after enabling that and other changes (and restarting the server), we still encountered this same system shutdown last night.I ran a complete set of hardware and system diagnostics and no errors, warning or issues were discovered.Does anyone have any other thoughts? Thanks again, - will |

| You should look into hardware problems like:1. Failing power supply.2. Improperly seated power cord.3. Loose connecters.CODO ERGO SUM |

| Thanks for the suggestions.- The diagnostics did check the power supply and found nothing.- This server is in a locked room.- A few of the system shutdowns are happening around the same time, and when the same set of batch jobs/ssis packages are running. And, we have had a shutdown during the day when someone manually ran the batch process too. But, this doesn't always happen. |

| Message 'I/O requests taking longer than 15 seconds to complete on file' is just warning, but may indicate disk issue. Did you check system event log? Do you have server monitoring tool? In this case, I'll let vendor to check the server. |

| Then how many disk arrays does the server have? How do you place db files on disks? Anyway, that warning will not cause server restart. |
