Is there any problems with installing sp3 for sql 2005?
I've heard both yes and no answers.
But I trust you all..

No, but I'd suggest also installed CU1 for SP3 so that you are completely up to date.

Thanks Tara,
Is there any way to download CU1 or will I have to request it?

Have you installed it in production yet Tara? Any issues?

We aren't able to install it into production until May due to the amount of downtime required. We have high availability requirements, so we have to wait until we have a large downtime such as when we move our applications to the DR site twice a year. Only things I can do before that are things that would require less than a couple of minutes of downtime in SQL Server such as failing over to other nodes in a cluster for MS security patches.

How can I tell which cumulative update package I'm currently running for 2005 SP2?

Thanks Tara.

It looks like we are running the initial release of SP2. If we are to apply SP3, are all 11 CU's for SP2 required before we do so?

No. But since you are installing SP3, you might as well get to the latest CU for that service pack. CU2 is the latest right now. I just installed SP3+CU2 on about 10 servers last night. I've also got SP3+CU1 on about 5 servers that I did a couple of months ago. These are all test/dev/perf/stage boxes though. We haven't yet installed it on any production systems due to logistics. We were going to do it in May, but that got postponed a few months due to issues unrelated to SQL Server.

You don't need to install the cumulative update packages unless you are encountering some issue that is fixed in one of them, but I like to be on the latest build if I'm already going to be installing a service pack, might as well do another 10 minute installation.

CUs are cumulative, you do not need to install any previous ones.

Hi Tara,

How long did the install take on each server?

Thanks
Sean

It takes about 15 minutes for sp3 and about 10 minutes for cu2. Add in the reboots and the whole process takes about 30 minutes per server.
