Hiya!
I'm having a problem installing SQL Server 7 Enterprise Edition (no service pack)on a Windows 2000 Server SP 2 machine (256 MB RAM,40 GB drive) off an original MSDN CD. Only the client components get installed. This is the output from the SQLStp.log file:

Windows 2000 Advanced Server, or Windows NT 4.0 EE is required for SQL 7.0 EE.

Only client components will be available for installation on Win2K Server.

Hiya!
Thanks. I tried installing Desktop edition. The installation tried to start SQL Server, couldn't, and installation froze. I had to stop it with task manager, as the screen didn't go away. The following was in the Cnfgsvr.out file:

Starting Service ...

An error occurred while attempting to start the service (1053)

SQL Server configuration failed.

The Errorlog file in the Install directory is completely blank.
The Services manager says SQL Server is "starting", but hasn't changed to "started".
Sqlservr.exe is running as a process, and this is the output of the SqlStp.log file:

This is an ugly problem. The cases I am seeing of this error usually result in a reinstall of the OS.

Try following the steps in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q276044&id=276044&SD=MSKB

and then reinstall. Hopefully that will work.

I got SQL 7 Std and I'm having still having a problem installing it on Windows 2000 Server. I followed all the steps in the MS KB article for manually uninstalling SQL, and stopped all unnecessary processes and services before reinstalling. But..this is the output from SqlStp.log:

Found this on dbforums.com, let me know if this helps.

If I remember correctly, your cnfgsvr.exe was failing because a connection could not be established
to the SQL Server and the failure was ConnectionRead(recv()). The failure may be due to an outdated
version of the shared memory netlibrary that has not been updated properly by MDAC. Try deleting the registry values for MDAC, but then reinstall MDAC before installing SQL Server.

1. Remove all the entries under the following Registry key that pertain to MDAC components:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
entVersion\Setup\Exception Components

2. Reinstall MDAC and then try installing SQL Server.

Also check to make sure your servername is not mixed case - if so, see KB Q285100 FIX: Local
Connection Attempt Fails When Windows NT Server Name is Mixed Case.

If you are still having trouble after trying the above, contact Microsoft Product Support Services
for further debugging steps.
