I have Master computer using SQL 2005 express. I am getting this:

connection failed:
SQL State: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 14
(Microsoft)(ODBCSQL Server Driver)(Shared memory)(Connection Open)(Invalid Instance()
Connection Failed
SQL State: '08001
SQL Server Error 14
MicrosoftODBCSQL Server Driver Shared Memory invaid connection

What am I doing wrong? My test in OCBC to the database fails each time.

Any help is appreciated.

Try via TCP/IP: serverName,portNumber

If that works and you don't want to remember the port, then I can help you setup an alias.

When you say server name- the one that came up when I set up SQL-Server? then go to the port and put in my 1433?

Data base has a default of 1433, and normally it looks for the (local) server and data base name with passcode.

Log into the database server directly, open a cmd window and type hostname. That's the name you need to test with.

1433 is just the default port, you need to find out what port you are using it and use that to test it. You can see the port in SQL Server Configuration Manager or in the SQL Server Error Log (it mentions it at startup).

I did the cmd to host - got that but I do not see the error report-where I was trying to open and get the errors are at the ODCB, click on the database then hit the local, click next put in the codes and that's where my errors are coming from.

If the test does not work, then I cannot back up the data base it claims the sql server is not there.

In the Server field is where you'd type serverName,portNumber.

I have loaded SQL express into several other computers, loaded the database software and it went in like snap of fingers. This one, loaded the sql express, then data base software - it claimed it had no sql. then I went into the odbc looked at server which has always been (local), next window is my database, put its codes in hit next for the test and that's my problem.

Do I need to remove sql express and reload?

Check the Services applet to ensure that the SQL Server service is running (Control Panel..Admin Tools..Services). Is it in the "started" state? Or do you not see it there at all?

ServerName,PortNumber should work then. Make sure you are specifying the right info though.

I am getting rummy here: in the OBDC- click on User-DNS-comes up with the name of my data base and Driver SQL
Click on Configure:

Name: My Data base name
how do I want to configure: Dababase connection
Which SQL Server: here it has (local)
hit next:it comes up with server authenticity:

Mine is set for SQL and password

when I put those in - it then comes up with the error.

At this point should I remove SQL express and start over?

Instead of (local), specify ServerName,PortNumber. This is just to test it out, it's not necessarily how it's going to be configured.

You could try reloading SQL Express, but I don't have high hopes that'll resolve this issue. It's up to you.

I reloaded the SQL Server - AND the Data base software.

When I did the set up for SQL server- Used the windows mode - it was checked so I left it that way.

2nd: put the server as: USER-and the numbers it came up with
3rd: went to the Client Config page put in 1433 as the port
and now...I get a different connection failed:

Sql State 01000
Error 10061
Microsfoft ODBC Sql Server Driver (TCP/IP Sockets) connectionOpen (connect()
Connection failed
Sql State: 08001
Sql Server Error 17

SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

Now what coach?

1433 is probably not the port, you need to look it up in the SQL Server Error Log or SQL Server Configuration Manager.

Looking in the SQL Server Manager - I do not see an error log, howerver the SQL Configuration Manager/items: SQL Server 2005/network configuration brings up: Protocals for Express

Open that : Memory - Enabled
Named Pipes: Enabled
TC/IP Enabled
via Disabled
Then I click on TCP - Protocals:
TP Dynamic Port: 0
TCP Port is blank

bottom: IP Dynamic port is 2908
TCP port is blank

Should they be anything differnt?

Sorry for the delay, had to work my other job. I did the change with 2908 and got a new connection failed:

Connection failed:
SQL State 28000
Sql Server Error 1852
Microsoft ODBC Sql Server Driver sql Server Login failed for sa
The server is not assocated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

Reading on this topic, it says I need to change the SQL Server from Authentication mode to "mixed mode"

two sites claim it was set up inproper, and change it, but I cannot find the SQL Server Enterprise Manager they speak about to change the "Authentication mode. Where is it that I need to change this?

You'll have to download Management Studio Express. Or you could just reinstall SQL and select the correct option to use SQL and Windows authentication. The default is Windows only, hence your error.

Tara: Thanks I re-loaded the SQL Express and set it to "mixed mode".
Re-loaded the software, then went to the ODBC. Login ID- SA, set my password - Next Page: Name of Data Sourc
Description of Data Base
SQL Server all seems okay.
Next Screen - Round 1 - had the Data Basee as my Default - greyed out.
Check mark at Use ANSI quoted identifiers
No check mark at ANSI nulls, padding and warnings.
hit Next
I get the Configuration Screen
Test the Data Source - and get the Test Completed Successfully.

Yeh!

Then - I go to put in the backup data base and I get this message:

(microsoft)(ODBC SQL Server Driver) (SQL Server) Incorrect syntax near Nnull".

In the past playing with this data base - usually its the (local) server, the SA password or the ROS and their password.

Got any ideas?

Tara: I forgot to mention the data base is greyed out reading my old notes that should not be grey it should be solid.
