I have installed SQL Server Standard on Windows 7 Professional.
The Server Name shows as <computer name>\SQLEXPRESS although it is not that in the installation. How do I stop this and have the instance name I entered list in the server name drop list on connection dialog. I have uninstalled and reinstalled numerious times.

Thanks for your help

Is there an older installation of sql server express version present?

No, you're never too old to Yak'n'Roll if you're too young to die.

It was removed before installation on Standard 2008.

Is the drop down list your only problem?
Have you tried to type in the correct name to connect?
Is the service running?

Yes, it is so far.
I have typed the correct instance, but it does not connect.
Checking in configuration manager, the service is running.
SQLEXPRESS is no longer installed, but it is still showing in the list. ? ? ?

Have you tried to click on <search...> in the drop down list?
Is the SQL Server Browser service running?
Have you tried to connect to (local) (if you are working on the server box)?

Have tried search in the drop list.
The server browser is not running now.
Have not tried to connect to local.

So you have two points to try and maybe then you got it to work.
