Hi,I'm a new user to SQLserver, although I have used it before in other locations. I have just installed SQLServer on my XPPro PC and it appeared to install ok...When I open the Server Management Studio it wont connect to the server on the same computer... I have turned off Apache to see if that was blocking it, but that didn't help.. The message I get is that the server is not accessable and to make sure that the server is configured for remote connections.. I looked up how to configure for remote connections and the required program SQL Server Surface Area Configuration is just not available in the menu... can anyone help me get this server configured so that I can connect to it please??Cnielsen |

It would appear that that may be the problem.. i don't sem to have anything refering to "services" I checked the web and there's a suggestion that these ar installed seperately.. which seems odd because I just installed the SQL server install package and the management tools package.. Surely that would include eveything to get a basic system running, wouldn't it?Cnielsen |

that is not an issue. If the installation and fine, you should be able to connect to it. KH
Time is always against us
|

I simply downloaded the files and installed them.. taking the defaults.. there were no errors.. I've stopped Apache, stopped my virus checker, stopped skype... what else could block it??Cnielsen |

I really don't know... I don't know how to check... Surely there must be some sort of diagnostic to tell where the problem is...Cnielsen |

KH
Time is always against us
Ok.. I think I'm starting to see whats wrong.. I haven't got all of the programs.I downloaded 1) SQLServer2005_SSMSEE.msi and2) SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exeAfter installing these two I have a number of programs but nothing that says "Administration Tools" I've got MS SQLServer 2005 and some sub menusMS SQLServer 2008 and sub menusMS Sqlserver 2008 R2 and sub menusBut no Administration side at all..There must me more I have to download and installThis is all a bit confusing, while I have worked in a SQLServer environment before I've never set one up from scratch before.. So I'm not sure what I'm supposed to have.I do appreciate your help.. I'm sure that once I get it running, I'll build my small database and be off and away... Cnielsen |

Here is what you have:1) SQLServer2005_SSMSEE.msi : SQL 2005 EXPRESS Tool2) SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe : SQL 2008 (or 2008 R2) Engine + ToolSince your SQL Config Manager shows green light on SQLEXPRESS, you already have SQLEXPRESS running on your machine. Please use SQL 2008/R2 Tool instead of SQL 2005 tool to connect to your SQL Server (connect to .\SQLEXPRESS)Thanks,Alexhttp://sqlbeyond.blogspot.com |

Net Start shows SQL Server (SQLExpress), SQL Server Browser, SQL Server VSS writer all runner... Also MySQL is running as well would that block the connection?
