I am trying to install SQL Server (SQLServer2005SP3-KB955706-x86-ENU) on my Windows 7 machine. I am getting an error
"this machine does not have a product that matches this installation package"
I dont have .net or sql server installed on my system.
Please suggest how to trouble shoot the issue.

SQLServer2005SP3-KB955706-x86-ENU is SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3. Not the SQL Server itself.

Are you trying to install SQ Server or the service pack ?

You have to install SQL Server first before installing any service pack.

For SQL Server 2005, see the following on the requirement

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506%28v=sql.90%29.aspx

the link did not mention anything on Win 7. If i recall correctly, you will need at least a Win 7 Pro edition to install. And For SQL Server, you can only install Developer or Express edition on Win 7
