I am trying to take a database offline:
ALTER DATABASE DBName SET OFFLINE

but the error I get is:

A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to the server. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)

Any suggestions please?

It means you were disconnected from the server when your command ran. Get connected first.
