Hi everybody,

I am starting to learn SQL and I have an older book "Murach's SQL for SQL Server" it comes with the SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Evaluation Edition and practice databases, ect...

So my question is..should I get a more up to date book and CD or should I use this because that is what I have right now and it is fine for starting off??

You should upgrade. SQL Server 2012 was released about 6 months ago, and SQL 2000 is no longer supported. There were significant changes and improvements added to SQL Server 2005 that make most SQL 2000 techniques obsolete.

There's plenty of tutorials in SQL Server Books Online for any version, and there's more information at Microsoft Learning: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/training/sql-server.aspx

I would not spend time on 2000 stuff as things have changed significantly since then. There might be some 2012 books out there, but you'll probably mostly find 2008 R2 stuff.

At this rate, it will only take me about 12 years to catch up to your post count.

No, server 2008 is likely the operating system. You need Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 and specifically Express edition unless you intend on purchasing a higher edition.
