what are the different methods of optimizing slow running stored procedures?

1. Checking execution plans
2. Refactoring code
3. Adding/removing/changing indexes
4. Update stats
5. Possible table redesign
6. Check blocking and wait stats
7. Follow best practices
8. If it's complex, I break it up into smaller chunks and optimize each
9. Check stats IO and time
Etc.
