I just installed SQL Server 2012 on my desktop, however, I cannot get ssms to log in to my local DB. I tried computername\SQLEXPRESS, .\SQLEXPRESS. I tried uninstalling and installing again and I keep getting an error saying cannot connect to computername\SQLEXPRESS.

Funny thing is I installed SQL Server 2012 on my laptop and had no problems.

Did you name the instance SQLEXPRESS? Check what services you have that start with SQL and post the names here.
