Download SQL Express with Advanced Services (ENU\x64\SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.ex) or SQL Express with Tools (ENU\x64\SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe ). Both of those will give you the database engine and SQL Server Management Studio.

Strictly speaking, if you are going to use Visual Studio, and if you are using it just for learning purposes, SqlLocalDB would suffice, but unless downloading a larger file is a problem for you, I would download one of the two that I listed above. If you already have Visual Studio, it should include localdb, if I am not mistaken.

thanks for the help, I tried the ENU\x64\SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe 1.3 GB but the install failed with this error, see below, which doesn't really say anything, I will now attempt the ENU\x64\SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe install. Is there no log somewhere that documents what the real problem is?

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007000B).
