 are the 'free' sql express versions a scam?

I tried to install all 3 versions of 2012 sql express and all got the same error. whatever it is that is wrong is certainly not made clear in the error message, the help link returns that there is no help, isn't that nice.
win 7 pro, 64 bit

hmm..were you using 64 bit or 32bit installation file?

64, that seemed the thing to do with a 64 bit processor running a 64 bit o/s
ENU\x64\SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe 132.3 MB
ENU\x64\SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe 1.3 GB
ENU\x64\SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe 669.9 MB

hmmm, I'll try the 32 versions, have nothing to lose at this point
