We want to do a Full backup once per week and Diff on days in-between on the primary replica of our AG.

Does anyone run Full/Diff on the primary in the AG? If so what happens if there is an automatic failover during the Differential schedule? Is the backup chain broken? I know about running the Primary Replica check but am concerned if Primary replica changes mid-backup cycle.

Just curious as to how people set-up Full/Diff on AG group.

Thanks, Morrisos

Run the backups using the AG listener name so that the backups always occur on the primary replica, regardless of which node it is on. We use sqlcmd for this and have the job scheduled on another server that is responsible for all jobs associated with all of our AGs (we have lots).

The backup chain is not impacted even if a failover occurs. What matters is that the log backups continue on the primary replica.
