Hi,

I am running out of time to figure this one out myself, but I am sure to some of you, this is a no brainer.

We plan to update a production sql2008R2 RTM (10.50.1600) to SP2.

Do I need to update it to SP1 first?

Also, I found the latest CU on it is 11, but the doc said if you don't have the issue in the list, don't apply them. What is your practice on dealing with CUs?

Thanks!

You can skip to SP2. I am Pro CUs as long as they aren't brand spanking new. Test first. MS is moving away from service packs.

My normal practise is to first apply on a non-production environment , monitor for a week and then apply on highet environments

Hello,
To make things more clear SP's are cumulative and each SP includes fixes which were released in previous CU's and SP's. So SP2 would include all fixes for SP1 and all fixes done in CU released after SP1. So you must apply SP2 there is no need to spply SP1. You must also consider applying SQL Server 2012 Sp2 CU1. If you need help you can refer to below link

Hope this helps
