| I'm working on migrating out sql7 databases to sql 2000 (sp3). I'd already moved several databases successfully using detach and attach.The database I tried to move last night uses linked server connections to Oracle. I installed the Oracle client softwarre a few weeks ago and set up the linked server which worked.Last night after a attached the new database, I couldn't get the linked server to work. When I try to access it via EM, I get a stack dump and the server shuts down. (Log message = SQL Server is aborting. Fatal exception c0000005 caught.) | Have you checked MS' knowledge base yet to determine if there is a fix for this? You usually just have to type in part of the message to find results in the knowledge base. Without knowing much about your environment, I would be impossible to find the articles for you. So I would suggest, before calling MS, is to go to support.microsoft.com and search on "generated fatal exception c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION".Tara |

| Well service pack 3 has lots of issues, so I'm not at all surprised that this could be due to that. You might want to try just reinstalling MDAC to see if that fixes it. If it doesn't, then you might want to get the server back on service pack 2. Or just call MS and have them provide a fix if it really is service pack 3.Tara |

| I don't have a good way to go back to SP2 because this Was a fresh install on a new server. I'm going to wait another day or two to see if anyone has ideas, then I'll call ms. Thanks for your help. |

| This one finally got solved and I wanted to share with everyone what happened. After spending 20+ hours on it myself and over 4 hours on the phone with 6 different MS engineers, the problem was that the domain account used to run SQL Server was not in the Local Admin group on the server and did not have sufficient rights to some of the Oracle client software. I have not run filemon or regmon to see exactly where it is but will when I have some time. I took the domain account running sql out of local admin because I've heard that is the best practice. However, there may be issues is you use SQL with other software on that box.Hope that this may help someone someday. |
