We need someone with top credentials and experience to resolve SQL timeouts for an ecommerce web site.

The server requiring solution is located at:

Access Northeast, 321 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749

The ecommerce web site was created in ASP and resides on an SQL server. You may require a good knowledge base in ASP programming. When the server reaches 300 to 400 users, the server will timeout. NOTE: Other companies have been unable to resolve the problem.

The interim fix has been to implement a script to reboot at regular intervals. The problem needs to be identified and fixed.

If you are in this area (Hudson, MA) and have the experience and expertise, email me at admin@therealdotin.com and include your phone number in the email.

If you can solve the problem, we will award you $500, plus a potential server maintenance contract.

THIS IS NOT AN AMATEUR CHALLENGE. You will have credentials and references, and min. of 5 years experience with SQL up to current SQL. Only qualified persons please.

We will only respond to selected candidates.

Email me at admin@therealdotin.com and include your phone number in the email.

Good luck!

Best regards,
Marc Mantha

I was curious about this. Whilst I can see the potential for a solution I can't see that someone who could REALLY solve the problem would do so for $500. Sure if they can put their finger on it straight away that would be an easy earner but: "NOTE: Other companies have been unable to resolve the problem". And eyechart is quite right that PSS would be the best value.

But other than that I reckon there might easily be a couple of days involved in understanding the system, profiling it, making changes in a "safe environment" - which may easily mean create a database on some DEV kit and getting a, possibly, massive database across.

So for someone good I would reckon we are up to $2,000 at least.

However, I would also expect "someone good" to be up for a no-fix-no-fee type deal.

Just my $0.02, and I'm way out of range of Hudson, MA.

Was that intentional?

In any case I thought that was funny...

I had a benefits registration system...40,000 users...had a window of a couple of months....

they all went on at the last couple of days...

$500? Hell that's not a lot a tequila. And besides, it's not the database!

Why do they always blame the database?

You Dr., Mister MD! How far is Hudson, that's what's ailing me....

hard to get excited for $500. Make it $5000 w/ expenses paid and you might have some takers.

I'd have to agree that this is more likely and ASP issue than a SQL Server issue. I did quite a bit of web app (ASP) load testing for a client a couple of years ago, and while we stressed IIS/ASP to it's death (had to reboot the server a number of times) SQL Server didn't break a sweat. I'm sure any previous professional consultants already went in and looked at the Requests Queued and found them way out of line but didn't figure out a solution in time, or at least not one that the client would accept.

And let's say you're really cheap, and only charge $30/hour. That only gives you two days (16 hours) to figure out the problem AND implement a solution before you start losing money on the proposition. And anyone with 5 years of SQL Server experience is charging more than $30/hour. Not to mention the rates that someone who understands all the tweaking options inside IIS would charge. That maintenance contract that the MIGHT offer you better be significant. Or I hope someone decides to take this on as a school project or charity case. Maybe someone who needs a good reference more than they want the money will go for it.

For $500, it better be be for an amateur. :) I charge $85/hr if you loose enough business and get desperate by the way. You can hire me for a minimum 20 hour engagement. I have a high opinion of myself, and consider myself worth a log.

Well, let's hope they went the Microsoft $250 single incident route, and saved themselves $250.

Otherwise they are in for a $5,000 bill to get "someone with top credentials and experience" to sort it out. By which time I presume the Business Opportunity Cost cost centre will have LOST several orders-of-magnitude of that.
