Hi,

Does SQL Server Express ship with a JDBC driver? ... Hardly so, but is it available somewhere?

I can recommend you to try jTDS, it's open source and a very good driver with SQL 2000. It's supposed to work well with SQL 2005 also, but I haven't tried it yet.
