big time...

I send an email to one specific manager who is very software inclined to provide feedback on a tool I am working on for the company I work for.

Well my boss sends me this nasty email about "..why did you tell _____ about the application, you will NOT do that from now on. YOU MUST go through me..."

O bologna, if you only cared for once...I'm so sick of corporate life, boy gone are the days when you can sit in pj's and get paid for it. Bunch of crap from a manager who is busy printing bday cards for his kids friends on company ink, paper and time. Meanwhile I bust my a^^ writing the tool, documenting the tool, rolling out the tool, training for the tool, and informing all of our global partners about the tool.

Meanwhile he doesn't know how to login...yet he doesn't want me to get feedback from potential users. How pathetic, they wonder why nothing is working right in that company. "Times are tough, money's tight, blah blah blah...."

Well you know why, it's cause your damned managers don't believe in coloboration. They are too busy tape measuring who pissed farther then the other. How pathetic....

I hear ya. I think we've all been there at some point.
Your only real solution is to leave, what's the contract market like where you live ?

It won't bother you at all in a few years, after your spirit has been completely crushed.

Start a family and learn to print birthday cards for your kids on company time...

Thats pretty grand. It just kinda sorta pisses me off that I put a lot of effort into things. Whether it is functionality, design, organization, etc. I try to do things the right way. And the person complaining is the one who comes in when they want to and complains about me try to get something done correctly. I mean all I was asking for was feedback.

My initial one line reply to the e-mail was this:

"Ok"

That was it, nothing else. I did that because no matter what I say it wont matter. Plus ok's piss people off.

He followed up with:

"Sorry if I sounded upset but I don't want _____ input on our projects, he just causes problems."

These are managers people. Is it me or is every company like this? I mean I read so many articles about companies like Yahoo and Google who believe in "team work" and collaboration. In the company I work for, everything (even internally) is a secret. I mean stuff gets rolled out without absolutely no one aware of it. Then all of a sudden users come in expecting things on apps that you were never even aware of.

My problem is why is internal development on NON SENSITIVE information such a secret. This has bitten us over and over again...
yet it happens to this day. It's time for change, and obviously I cannot do that, since management doesn't approve of someone who tries to get feedback and tests on systems that are rolled out where there has been absolutely no testing and no feedback. Why? Because that would help me out, but why should we help Jonny out lets make his life difficult and complain after the fact....

I've been told over and over by buddies and other co workers who "understand" and I try to take it like a grain of salt...but sometimes the work you do becomes a part of you and you care about it.

Damnit I'm looking out for the company...I'm giving you "THE TRUTH" even if you "CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH"

Ok done ranting, I hope everyone has a lovely night :).

PS: Contracting is not good right now, especially in Michigan...been there done that..markets kind of dead...least it is around here.

relax Jon. when we want to fix or something and we need approval for it we wait for it for 2 weeks minimum...
so noone gets upset we just do little stuff in our PJ's for two weeks and get paid for it.
i guess a corporation is a corporation no matter where... i do wonder however how does anyone get anything done with that kind of attitude....

If it really bothers you, do it your own way. Sometimes you have to seize the power to do things the way you want.

If people see that you are right, they will go along. It's always easier to ask for forgivness than to get permission before hand.

It may get you in trouble, it may win you praise, or it may get you both. It's up to you to decide if the risk is worth it to you.

In any case, they will know you are a force to be dealt with, and won't take it lying down. And they will all know your name, even if it gets prefixed with "That F***ing Jon".

I gotta tell ya, the best thing that happened to me in that regard was telling the Boss what I thought and letting the chips fall where they may. Unfortunately, my boss was a former Lance Corporal of mine when I was his Company Gunny back in '82. After 3 years of his Dilbert-style hijinks and oneupmanship, I expressed my opinion of his sophomoric (and brutally futile) attempts at any recognizable form of leadership in less than civil terms---albeit without the use of either sharp objects or profanity! That's tact for ya! Naturally I was laid off 6 months later. Now I have a better job with a terrific boss, terrific co-workers, and a terrific company to work for. Sometimes a change of scenery makes a world of difference!

As long as the scenery isn't the unemployeement line....

Office Politics has to be mastered just like T-SQL....not that I'm any good at it....but you HAVE to learn to deal with it...

You speak of collaboration...see any "managers/durectors/vp's" who don't know anything?

Yeah well, they collaborated with the right people...

Don't be jealous...just do it better...

Brett,

The scenery WAS INDEED the unemployment line for 3 months! But it was worth it! I got a chance to find something I wanted to do--where I wanted to do it!

jhermiz,

Brett's right about 'jealousy'. Aren't you envious that you bust your butt to do a good job and they slack off or goof off? You need to ask yourself why you're so concerned about their behavior. You can't control them, so why worry about it? Hey, that's how I got my first--and last--ulcer. I gave up policing the behavior of the world a long time ago. There's an OLD saying: "Living well is the BEST revenge". I never let the personal use by management (I once was management, too!) of company equipment bother me. I look after my own behavior and my own job. I don't judge what others do. I let God worry about everything else while I worry about my own actions and if I'm setting a good example for others to follow.

And you know what? I sleep every night with a clear conscience and no worries.

I'm 47, I look 33. And I'll probably live to be 90. (God willing!)

Take it easy, and try to have a great day. Every day is a Blessing because, hey, you're alive to enjoy it!

i agree with brett, if what you are doing is critical to operations, take the risk, no matter what the consequence, in the end they'll realize all your efforts and they'd try to compromise (even if it's not obvious). You'll notice the little changes being made and hey, it's not a perfect world and we can't expect to find a perfect company to work in unless you'd be the owner (he he he)

in the meantime, stay cool, learn some anger management techniques, whatever you're feeling towards your boss is not worth the ulcer and wrinkles it's causing you.

life is too short to waste it on solving other people's problems/hang ups in life.

i've been where you are and still in the same company . the trick is accountability, let them worry about what will happen next as long as you did your part (fully documented, ofcourse, he he he).

My philosophy (when I remember it) is that if someone does something 'bad' then something 'bad' will happen to them in return (not neccessarily something that you do). I find that if you have the patience this can be pretty successful.

The other one is to give the impression you are considering leaving (without actually saying or doing much) sometimes that works. I tell my lot that four years is a long time to stay in the same IT job (I've been here five), the look on their faces is worth it if nothing else

steve

And how is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain.

Hey Steve,

Be careful with that "impression I'm leaving" ploy. Sometimes they'll take you up on it! They did it to me back in 2000! Guess they thought since I was headed for the door, they'd help me out it, too!

very true...if you cannot back up your word or actions best not to even show it.

Else you're OUTTA HERE!!!!

I think I like jen's old quote "keep it simple"

Maybe I need to :)

I just ordered the book by Dale Carnegie "How to stop worrying and start living" ... maybe it will help me change :)
