I get "the network path was not found" when I choose the MSDE instance in the Service Manager.

What happens when you try to start the MSSQLSERVER service from the Services applet? Any errors in the Application Log in Event Viewer?

they (MSDE and MSSQLSERVER) run from there and also in QA and EM. when i type <compname>\MSDE in server manager i get the error.
i had a hard time registering the MSDE instance in EM and this post was going to include this also, but when i tried again for the sake of typing exactly what the error said, lo and behold, it registered. so, this post is only about why i can't see the msde processes in the server manager.
