Yeah make stuff up, I'm sure we can come up with some ideas for you. Everyone where I work has been told that the guy I share an office with is doing some TOP SECRET work for a few weeks and he can't talk to anyone (not even his manager) about it. i find the whole thing hilarious but it has put him in an awkward positionsteveA sarcasm detector, what a great idea. |

Jon, be overly nice to them. take a week and bother them to death.that way you'll come out as needy and they'll leave you alone.i think everyone will agree that noone likes a needy person, especially women.women have a weird vendictive streak in them that can come out at a most unexpected moment, so don't offense them in any way.just my thoughts on the subject... Go with the flow & have fun! Else fight the flow |

coming from a woman's point of view, tell them point blank, you do not wish to be disturbed and you are not interested in shop talksome women are more attracted to men who are evasive (mysterious in some way) --------------------keeping it simple... |

Never had the problem, though I get along well with them when they are not doing something stupid. I was told that when I get upset I look like I am going to kill everyone in the room. (This has more of an effect when your 6’ 2” and they know you used to do just that) One thing you may want to think about, if they can see that it upsets you they may be doing it just for that reaction. It is not just guys that needle each other. Bothering them back, I would not go there, it may get you a harassment suit. I have one fail proof method that will work on just about anyone. Don’t say one word or react in any way. Just stare at them (a creepy or mean look on your face helps but don’t change expressions). They will either get frustrated that they are not getting a reaction, or get creeped out. In the service we called it PSY-OPS Psychological warfare. Personally I call it the silent treatment, my wife use to go off on me about this or that now I do this and it drives her nuts and she storms away. (The best part is I still get to make up without going through the effort of having an actual fight)….. That reminds me today is my anniversary, better make some dinner reservations. |

The solution to your problem is literally right in front of you. The secret is the power of boredom. Whenever they drop by, just tell them about your latest adventures in SQL development:“Mary, I’m glad you dropped by, you’re such a good listener. Listen to what happened last week when I was debugging the TSP reports job…”Insert about 20 minutes of very detailed, rambling discussion of all the steps you went through to fix the problem. Include a few pointless digressions to discuss database normalization, the virtues of SQL Server vs. MYSQL, and threads on SQLTeam.Don’t be concerned by the look of pain on their face, this is perfectly normal. If they try to leave, grab their arm, and say, “I’m just getting to the best part!” Finish up when it looks like they can’t take anymore.“…and so in the end the whole problem was caused by the change I made to the insert trigger on the TSP type table! Can you believe that? Hey, I have a million stories like this, but that’s one of the best. Sorry you have to leave so soon.”Just to reinforce the lesson, drop by their office a few days later, and tell them the exact same story, adding details you forgot the first time. They won’t need a third session. Most likely, they will experience severe physical pain at the mere mention of your name. Word will spread through the office, and people will run away when you approach.CODO ERGO SUM |
