There can be two reason for this error.

1) The backup file is corrupt
Incase the backup file is corrupt there are few tools available to recover the data for objects in database.

2) The backup is not complete.

If the backup is not complete, get the complete back. If its a transactional backup then make sure that you are restoring Latest Full , Latest Differential (If Any) and then the transactional backup.

Hi,
I had also faced this problem before. But the experience was very bad. Not even third party tool could recover the file. But you can try it out.But it is better take a another backup and do the necessary job.

People, I hate to point it out to you that if he/she is trying to restore the db then it's hightly unlikely that he/she will be able to make another backup hence he/she is trying to restore it.

when you made the backup did you run any data verification?
Check your backupReports/backupHtmlReport if you made any for more info

"when you made the backup did you run any data verification?"

My considered opinion is that the only verification of a SQL Backup worth its salt is to try to restore it on a different machine
