I've thought about this some more and "may" have an acceptable exception. If something reasonably urgent crops up where I don't have an immediate answer I may post quickly on here early in the troubleshooting, then at a later point, come back to see if anyone was able to offer any suggestions.

This isn't out of laziness but more a case of making use of all available resources in as short a space of time as possible. It's also triaged to some extent in that there are some things that I would not expect to get a reply for.

This seems reasonable to me as otherwise I will go through the troubleshooting process. When that fails and I've run out of alternatives, I post here, then wait in the hope that someone here will be able to help. It's that wait (in this sort of case) that doesn't seem right unless it can be left overnight for example.

Did you notice that there have been a lot of homework questions posted lately?

I think this topic backfired badly. If you do a Google search for "sql server" and "homework", this topic comes up as the 4th item, so it's actually drawing in homework questions!

Somewhat predictably, we come out on top for "sql server" and "bog snorkelling".

Hello,

I know this is quite old but I like to add my two-penneth in if I may.

You probably not realize that some people who post so-called homework questions here are doing it because they exhausted other means. ok, I can only speak for myself here but that's how I feel!

When you are new to something and trying to take it all in and spend days on a simple syntax problem(days that you can't spare really!) then comes a point when you either ask someone else and throw the laptop out of the window - feel like that right now:-)

To be honest, for me personally posting a question is the last resolt after I've read the books, read my lecture slides, spend hours on the internet AND read the forum answers.

ok, I can understand that for some people it might be first port of call and they have my pity. For me, even after someone on the forum has posted an answer I still learned from it and remember it because of the time spent on it!

There, rant over now.

that's the whole point. we are happy to help with homework as long as the poster shows us what they tried so far and what they don't understand.
but just posting it without even trying is just stupid.

I would rather help a student than some idiot who has passed himself off as a DBA and is now in way over his head...

Seriously, zdstudent...
the types of homework question we get are NOT, as a rule, syntax issues.

If it is not practically useful, then it is practically useless.

Do these people actually have SSMS or QA installed?

Or is it all theory?

It's the ghost of Kaiser past!

Oh, Ghost Brett. Are these the database schemas that must be, or are these the database schemas that may be?
