What's an "anacedent"? I never saw that word before. I don't think any of the online dictionaries have either.

At the risk of overstepping my bounds: don't be an anacedent. Regards, hmscott"

Anacedent is somewhat famous to those who look through the Oracle forum over there. He is very good with Oracle, but has very little patience for anyone who does not do their own research for simple questions. He also does not mince words about it. For a time, his signature was
quote:
Are you a vacuum, or a black hole in the universe of clue?
Another favorite quote is "Ready, Fire, Aim!", whenever someone has jumped to a bad conclusion. |

I thought this one would turn into the unstoppable force meets the immovable object but sadly blindman was being the polite guest - it just petered out into some techy conversation about high water marks and transaction committing or something. http://www.dbforums.com/showthread.php?t=1616921 |

I thought that was the best part, because of the discussion that seemed to say that Oracle really makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot like this and that's why it's so much better than SQL Server.

It was an anti climax to see the question garner a series of answers (of sorts) after such a promising set of opening exchanges. Depends on how you measure these things of course.
The compexity surrounding such a simple operation, the range of opinions proffered and resources referenced was certainly eye opening since I have never had the pleasure of administering Oracle. |

We're now talking about consultancy fee rates and prodigious amounts of available work, right?!!

| Looks like the old debate about locking and read consistency to me. It is a common debate, and I think a person's view is mostly fueled by whichever system they were exposed to as a child. The debate is also peppered with plenty of FUD, and assumptions as displayed by this post: http://www.dbforums.com/showpost.php?p=6266334&postcount=19. Personally, I don't see either system as being better than the other. The developers have to understand the differences, is all. Sadly, these days with Rapid Application Development (or whatever paradigm they have now), no one seems to have any time to actually try to understand even the language the program in every day. |

Damn! My eldest is 13 ... is it too late to expose them to one or other? What about the 7 year old?
I feel so inadequate as a parent ...

That will be the Extreme Programming surge, which you have missed. Bit like leaping off a 20M ramp on your skateboard and demonstrating your consummate skill (which is based on "Hope for the best" )

I opened up the hard drive casing, removed the shiny disk, set it on a train track and let a train smash it, then I taped it to the nose of a rocket and fired it into the sun, which then went supernova, as luck would have it.
how can I get my data back?

Damn! You beat me to it "I've been a member of SQL Team for a while, and have posted 47 posts; My data is really important. However, I didn't bother to set up any automated backups"
