Hi and welcome to SQLTeam my russian friend! If you want to discuss relativity and dimensions, please feel free to email me.

Well, since you asked nice
We'll ignore star schema design in dimensional (cube, OLAP, what-have-you) databases, other than to note that a fact table can have many dimensions (subject to implementation and hardware constraints).
Moving on, then, to relational (let's say, the "OLTP" world):
A table represents a relation. This is where the word "relational" comes from, as in "relational database", the "R" in RDBMS.
A table has some number of columns specified for it. These correspond to attributes in the relation being represented.
The dimensionality of a relation is the number of attributes it has. These correspond to placeholders in the predicate that the relation models.
So, for example, a table with 2 columns represents a relation with two attributes, models a binary predicate and is 2-dimensional. In general, a table with n columns represents a relation with n number of attributes, models an n-ary predicate, and is n-dimensional.

Thank you for the Class 101 notes. As a sidenote, did you read the topic in the link?

Yer welcome. It's just that in an industry where a practitioner can be considered an "expert" (and make a good living professionally) without even knowing the fundamentals of the field, I've learned never to take such knowledge as a given.
Does it ever blow your mind that probably the majority of people that you so patiently help and have still made "the list" on this thread get paid to do what they do?

P.S. Yes, I read the topic. |

i acctually have agree with the rel guy on the blowing the mind point. being an "IT professional" is a very easy title to get even with the total lack of skills. and majority never get those skills. that'd be like having me performing a heart surgery wittout the proper medical training. sure... i know how the heart works and looks like but hell if i feel competent to fiddle with it...

So when a lesser experienced surgeon consults a more experienced surgeon, should the lesser experienced surgeon listen to the advice he get, or should he tell the more experienced surgeon
- No, I want to do this open heart medical procedure my way because I don't like the suggestion you gave me
I think the lesser experienced surgeon should pay attention to the advice he get, or the chances are that the lesser experienced surgeon ends up like a modern Dr Frankenstein. For what I can tell, top 20 posters on SQLTeam have at least 250 years of combined experience is this field.

I have got to agree with this.
Until these people have been in situations where they are told 'I don't care how, just get it done!', then they are mostly full of drivel. |
