Mine too, but I didn't want to call him out yet. I was thinking maybe it was me as I'm having a "not so good" morning and am just a bit irritable so I was trying to "play nice". Obviously, it's not me!

quote: When tested, the new system failed to find matches for terrorist-suspect names that were spelled slightly different from the name entered into the system, a common challenge when translating names from Arabic to English. It also could not perform basic searches of multiple words connected with terms such as "and" and "or."
Makes me wonder if they are using SOUNDEX.
Should I offer to sell them my fuzzy-search algorithm for a paltry million dollars?

Did they consider the possibility that someone might just use a fake name?
I guess they're too busy making sure no one tries to carry more than 2 oz. of mouthwash onto a plane.

too bad the mouthwash patrols aren't using this db.
then you wouldn't be able to take '2 oz.' but all these would get through:
'2 ounces' 'two ounces' 'two oz.'

thanks :) I'll study it ========================== btw a bit related to our subj: http://www.spoj.pl/problems/PRHYME/ I tried it but timelimited. True I did it in Python nonetheless.. Not so easy all it; and I'm very unwilling to rewrite it in C++

print dbo.CompareText('Alan Smith', 'Alan Smith')

----<< it's not a prefix; it's a whole name of an orphan that cannot be "juniour"

Stoad, first of all the function is CompareTEXT, not CompareNAME. As you can see from the code it does not parse the string into name components. It treats it as a single text string, which also allows it to be used for comparing addresses and other strings (such as foreign names that do not follow Western three-part name formats).
Second:

print dbo.CompareText('Alan Smith', 'Alan Smith, jr')
81 ----<< to my taste it should be 100
...then your taste would be wrong. When searching for "Alan Smith" you cannot match it 100% against "Alan Smith, jr". There could be an "Alan Smith, Sr" in the database, or even simply another "Alan Smith".
