I am really sorry about this but I seem to be having a little trouble and I wondered if someone could help?

I have just installed SQL server 2005 but I cannot seem to connect to it in Managment studio, is there something that I am missing?

It is asking for a server name, and if I click browse it does not seem to find anything.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tara thanks for the reply.

Here is the erro info:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

Cheers

Did you try enabling remote connections via the Surface Area Configuration tool?

Also, are you trying to connect to a SQL Server that is local or remote? If it is local, did you verify that the SQL Server services were started via the Services applet in Admin Tools in Control Panel?

Yes this is local.

How do I verify that the services have started?

Thanks Again Tara.

Unfortunatly I do not have any entries in services for SQL server.

The install did say it was a success.

Should I reinstall?

You probably only installed the client tools and not the database engine. So yes you must do the install, this time selecting the option to install the database server.

Ok Thanks Tara I will reinstall and get back to you.

By the way I do have visual studio 2003 and 2005 installed on this machine too.

Would that make any difference?

If you don't have the SQL Server services listed, then no.

No it does not make a difference what version you are trying to install. After this installation, do the services appear this time?

Hi Tara and thanks again for the reply.

No there is nothing when I look at the services.

Also if I try and run the surface area tool I get the following message:

TITLE: Surface Area Configuration
------------------------------

No SQL Server 2005 components were found on the specified computer. Either no components are installed, or you are not an administrator on this computer. (SQLSAC)

------------------------------
BUTTONS:

OK
------------------------------

I am the administrator by the way.

You didn't install the database engine then. The services would exist otherwise.
