Brian writes "Hello,

We are having a little trouble upgrading our sql database from sql 7 to sql 2000.

Here is what we are doing:

- we have a sql 7 server running on Winnt 4.0 Server (p2 256mb ram) you can see the need to upgrade.

- we have a new server: we haven't decided to use either winnt 4.0 (on new hardware) or server 2k. - suggestions pls

- one problem we are having is that the we cannot run a successful backup

- next we are unable to export any data through scripts. no error is given, it just dies.

- our only approach is to detach/re-attach the database...

- i read the articles you have here, but i am not sure if it will work for us... with each method described, we have problems

if i asked questions that you already have here, please point me in the right direction! and i appoligize!

if i never provided enough info, please feel free to email me.

thank you,
Brian"

Why not?

Again why not - can you script the database and bcp the data?

If you can't do either of those then sounds like you are in trouble.
If you can't take a backup then it implies you aren't too concerned about the database so maybe you should use your process to rebuild from scratch.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

Good! Get a more up to date O/S!

"our only approach is to detach/re-attach the database..."

Please do NOT detach until you know you have a valid backup. If for any reason you cannot re-attach that database you will be hosed.
