you cannot install standard edition on winxp. you can only install developer edition on winxp. You can also look at installing MSDE or SQL Express on your desktop, but they don't ship with all features or management tools.

workgroup, standard and enterprise edition can only be installed on server OS systems (win2k, win2k3).

All i really want would be to create a simple database , and use a tool like the query Analyzer, its for home use. Would SQL Express be the best option ?

I use a win2k3 virtual machine on top of winxp and run sql enterprise edition from there instead.

my suggestion is to download virtual pc 2004 free from here :

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=6D58729D-DFA8-40BF-AFAF-20BCB7F01CD1&displaylang=en

and install standard edition on it after creating a shared folder, it really is that simple if you running xp.

Why don't you just get the SQL Servr Developer Edition?

It costs about $50 US, and gives you all the features of the Enterprise Edition.

In the Virtual Pc Console press file , new virtual machine wizard and setup a 2003 server from here.
Other than that I think MVJ's advise is better.
