With no disrespect to your good self:

WTF are companies doing putting an untrained person in charge of 300 databases and expecting that "trainee" to be able to manage the databases in, presumably, a mission-critical manner by only giving him/her access to Google?

I give up

He's not alone! My company have just asked me to create a new SQL database to deal with vast amounts of info and change the way we deal with some of our data.

The only experience I have of SQL is some very basic queries! Good think I'm a quick learner.

"Good think I'm a quick learner."

Problem is that it takes experience, and usually training, to be able to set up a safe environment to ensure that a database is secure.

You can learn from your mistakes, of course, but that may involve losing data along the way, or long periods of service outages - which may not be very good for your company's PR!

My view remains the same. Companies that just get an inexperienced person to look after mission critical data is nuts.

Why don't they get a consultant in for a few hours to set stuff up, you can look over their shoulder, and if you ask some sharp questions you, and your company, will be miles ahead of where you are now.
