 Query to Change increase the size of a field

Hi all,
I tried to change the size of a field of my table using the query :-

ALTER TABLE test MODIFY id varchar(50)

Initially the size of id was set to 30 .Is there any other way or any error in my query.Please help me soon.

ALTER TABLE test ALTER COLUMN [Id] varchar(50)
