hi everyone. i just recently started learning SQL SERVER 2000 and SQL SERVER 2005. I was wondering if anybody could help me understand what the main tasks are for a SQL DBA. and if there are any tutorials to do those tasks. like what is the daily routine like? how hard will it be to transfer from book learning to actual DBA work? and if anybody knows some good tutorials to performance tuning as well as the major roles and responsibilites of a DBA i welcome the advice. hope you can help. thanks again.

Your question is hard to answer. The job that I do and the tasks that I perform are going to be different from other DBAs.

In a nutshell though, I basically ensure that all my databases are available and can be recovered. that is it. All the other stuff we do is secondary to these 2 things.

What do you think a dba should do?
