Can't get SQL server 2005 to use more memory

Can't get SQL server 2005 to use more memory

Here'a a break down of what I've done so far.

* Windows 2003 32bit Enterprise with 10gb RAM
* SQL 2005 32bit Enterprise
* boot.ini - have added /3GB /PAE switches
* Confirmed which account SQL Server is running under and added that account to Local Policies/User Rights Assignment/Lock pages in memory
* Enabled AWE in SQL SERVER
* set minimum and maximum server memory to 9gb
* Rebooted.

Task manager says the following:
sqlservr.exe - 95MB usage * I know this is normal when using AWE right?
The actual physical memory used is 3.13GB and never goes higher. So this leads to believe that SQL is utilizing 3GB because of the /3GB switch, but it's not using the rest like it should be. I tried it without the /3GB switch and it only went up to about 2.1GB usage.

I've turned on performance monitor and SQL server target memory says 8.65 GB while the Total Server Memory says 2.45GB.

I've run:
EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced options'
RECONFIGURE
GO

EXEC sp_configure 'awe enabled'
RECONFIGURE
GO

And it confirms that the running value for both is 1

Please help.

What's total db size on the server? Tried set max memory to 9gb?

Your issue here may be because you set min and max to the same value. It's not really an issue though because that just renders the value to be static and SQL Server will acquire it (as needed) gradually until it reaches the specified value. See this article for more on that:

First I had minimum set to 2GB and max set to 9GB. Then I tried setting both to 9GB. I highly doubt that it has to do with the fact that SQL Just doesn't need that much ram yet because before I put in the 3GB switch it stayed at just under 2GB usage, then after the 3GB it now stays just under 3GB usage. So it's using as much as it can but for what ever reason, it's not using the additional memory that AWE should have made available to it.

I have 1.5 GB of DB

One thing to consider is "Performance Monitor (PerfMon) and Task Manager do not account for memory correctly if Address Windowing Extentions (AWE) support is enabled."

Perfmon gives me correct number so far. If you really like to check whether sql uses more memory, pick a large table and run 'select * from tabname'. Then check total memory in perfmon.

Apparently it can be unreliable, at least according to Microsoft.

Well ran your select * against a table with 10M+ records and while my CPU was pinned at about 40% my ram didn't budge over what it was already maxed out as which was 2462720k. This is the "Total Server Memory" Found under the SQLServer:Memory Manager.

So does this confirm for you guys that AWE isn't working? Moving forward now, what can I do to get it working.

Sql uses memory as needed, shouldn't use 9gb memory for 1.5gb db.

but the perfmon counter for target memory says 8.65GB. This was pointed out in one of the first messages in the thread.

Seems to me there is a problem here.

yup, I got this line in there from the last time I restarted it.

"Address Windowing Extensions is enabled. This is an informational message only; no user action is required."

Yup, SP2 on windows 2003 and sp2 on sql 05

These numbers are going to be a little off at the moment since I did reset the server again. currently it's still ramping up memory but it will probably stop after 1 more gig of memory use. I'll post again tomorrow.
