I have this old Pentium II here at home and I'm not sure what to do with it and at the same time I don't want to throw it away since it was one of my first computers and the person who gave to me passed away... I was going to make it a IP PBX gateway, but I need a more powerful or should I say a "real machine" to do this, any other suggestions?

a) Transform into a router?
b) ...or a File Server?
c) other?

Depending on the PBX software, a PII can probably handle PBX duties OK. I wouldn't use it for any current linux distro, it will be too underpowered. How about a DOS 6 training machine, You can find the old DOS programs that needed a patch because the pentium was too fast for the code (procomm for DOS was one I remember) :)

FreeDOS is another option. You can also relive your arcade childhood by turning it into a MAME machine. The emulator is available for pretty much any consumer OS made in the last 20 years.

My vote is for linux, you could use it to serves files, web, email all that sort of stuff. Mame sounds like fun - though does it beat World of Warcraft?

Yeah, I'm going to install linux on that box, the plan is to use as a router, being the gateway for my network and handling QoS for my Voip phone, since the Linksys routers can't really handle QoS.

Now, while I was doing some research on "what to do with my old pc", I found some really cool articles of people hacking their old XBoxes, has anyones tried that yet? I have 2 XBoxes at my home, that's double of the fun.

Master of Magic Stronghold Xwing, Xwing Vs. Tie Fighter.

im a gamer most of the time.

Seti @ Home runs on linux, so you can make use of every cpu cycle.
SQL 05 and Server 2003 will load on it if you have 512mb ram (the max for an intel chipset those days)
Its no powerful eneough to Decode DivX or Mpeg4 video, but you could use it as a DVD server tossing movies to tv's with that goofy linksys wirelss box.

no point in running seti@home because intelligent life seems to extinguish itself. if it didn't, the galaxy would have been colonized long ago, and evidence would be everywhere.

we are doomed.

If you strip the casing off of the processor itself, its makes an awesome keychain You dont even need to drill a hole.
