Today I passed 70-228 + 70-229
so now I am certified on SQL Server!
( Our co needed it to get cheap msdn licenses, and I got paid for the hassle )

Unfortunately if I reveal my points 730,839, noone will take may posts seriously anymore,(as if anyone ever did).

Thanx
Well as an afterthought I did learn some things from taking the tests.
There are always pieces of knowledge to pick up,
and the tests pointed me to some areas of sqlserver where I had limited experience.
So I have done some checking up in BOL afterwards.

All in all, the time was pretty well invested I think.

>> "they don't shouw what you got wrong"
That's definitely would be interesting to see,
I guess they would just get too many complaints !

Well I think people who haven't passed any sql server exams obviously don't know what they are doing.
I feel a sudden urge to use a cursor and the index tuning wizard for the first time.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

Good luck in your new career?

Just seen a post from someone

We get heaps of
people who tell us they know the product and just haven't bothered to do the
exams but are sure they already know everything on them. Or they say they
are just dead against "giving Bill more money", etc. We say, no problems,
we'll book you in for a test tomorrow at our cost. Very few take up the
offer. Most suddenly get very busy.

I'm busy.

I'm planning on taking the tests for 2005. I think everyone ought to take them one time just to see what they're all about and pick up information they would miss otherwise. The studying part is probably as important as the test to me. I pick up some new information everytime I read a book about SQL Server (with a couple rare disappointing exceptions). It always amazes me how much I don't know or have forgotten repeatedly in the last 10 years.

I get that from forums - and beginners I work with who always find somwthing interesting.

>> The studying part is probably as important as the test to me.
That's why I've never taken an sql server test before.
Had a free test expiring at the end of the year and planned to take it in something I didn't know and force me to learn it. But I never really expected to do that and always knew I would take a sql server one at the last moment.

More important than the test I would say.
ALso, the fact that You will have questions in areas where You are weak, might actually make You study those areas.

i always wanted to do stand up comedy!! it even pays better
so here's a joke:
son: "dad, what are negative numbers?"
dad: "well son that's the numbers less than zero."
son: "i don't get it..."
dad: "look, if you have a bus with 3 people on it and it comes to a bus stop.
so 5 people get out and 2 get in and the bus is empty."

so what do you think? do i stand a chance?

I think it would be interesting to know how many of the others on here do/don't have any of the exams

Personally I've never taken an exam after an IT course (in the last 10 years I've done Novell, SQL and IIS courses) - partly because I'm too mean to spend the money, partly because the jobs I have done have never required it and partly because I think that what's important is the experience combined with the knowledge from the course i.e. not neccessarily remembering the detail of something, more just knowing that it can be done and how to then find out how to do it. (e.g. BOL) - for example I have never used BCP (don't ask!) but I know that if I need to the details will be in BOL and that if I get really stuck I know a good place to ask for help.

There is always new stuff to learn especially with something so complex as SQL server and this forum/books etc are great places to pick up tidbits.

Having said this I'm certain that others will feel differently, in some jobs the exams are very important but I have occasionally come across people who know all the theory (i.e. from the courses) but have little or no practical knowledge. I think there needs to be a balance and it's different for everyone

(get's down from soapbox and decides to go home to beer fridge)

And how is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain.

I have 9 'O' levels (they are exams you take aged 16 - for you lot that left the Mother Country 200 years ago ... !)

Errmmm ... That's It. No tools-specific-qualifications amongst my colleagues that I know of (but it wouldn't stop me employing someone with Exams, but they'd have to have RealWorldStuff too)

Our Intern has a Computer Science degree, but he'll be off when he finds a Real Job.

But all the long-term folk have no other Big qualifications - although I think one of them has an agricultural degree!

Hmmm .... quite a few years ago, when I had two programmers, the senior programmer had a Masters in Artificial Intelligence, and the junior programmer had a Doctorate in AI. Used to tickle me when I told that to clients! ... I presume it took the junior programmer longer to decide that AI was a waste of time ...

I'm thinking of "sponsoring" the Intern to go to S.E. Asia for a month or two to help out there ... so he'll be doing something he's not qualified for too!

it would be interesting to know what qualifications have your coworkers.
i study electrical engineering -> medical cybernetics (hope to graduate sometime this year)
and i have coworkers (all programmers): one is an economist, one a physicist, other various stuff in computer sciences...

"official education"

From my perspective its pretty irrelevant. Unless one of our clients demands it I don't see the point. We'd have to learn about a bunch of stuff, just to get through the exams, that we'd never actually use.
