| I got an email from my ISP last night saying that they were upgrading my connection - for free!!! - from 512k to 8Mb - I'm not even certain that my modem/router (whatever it is) can cope with more than about 4Mb as I thought I would never be able to afford that.Excuse my cynicism but I find this all very difficult to believe particularly as I can find no reference elsewhere even on their website. Has anyone else in the UK heard anything like this?steveAnd how is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. |

do you have ADSL? that can cope with 8 MB. but they probably meant that they were just upgrading the cables and not you connection speed. 8 Mb is required for ADSL TV. we have it here in slovenia - 300 channels... nothing special though...Go with the flow & have fun! Else fight the flow  |

| I know I saw an article on Slashdot about it not too long ago, maybe 2-3 weeks. There was also a push by a provider in Australia for an 8 Mbit service too. Still waiting for the U.S. to catch up... |

| In response to Spirit, yes it is ADSL, I seem to remember when I was looking that some of the kit would only support a lower speed than some of the other kit. As it was about 18 months ago now I can't remember any detailsI've just found this [url]http://www.bt.com/broadband/2mb/faq.html[/url] which only applies to the BT broadband connections, but the email I got said that this was as a result of the BT upgrades, it also strongly suggested that (at least during off peak) that my link would be 8Mb for what I currently pay approx £22 per month and that it would be available in a pay as you go type format for about £15 per month.So if anyone wants to know who my ISP is I'm quite happy to tell them especially as if they sign up with me as their referrer I get to pay £1 per month less for each of them.Of course if you live in the wilds of Northern England as I do it is likely to be a while til BT get around to the upgradessteveAnd how is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. |

well here our ADSL provider (only one here...) gives us ADSL TV for 20 EURO per month. with you get a "cool" keyboard that you can use to surf the net on tv. you don't even need a computer. the only prerequisite is ISDN.but the pic is not always that great  Go with the flow & have fun! Else fight the flow |

| A [UK] mate of mine said he'd just got a no-cost upgrade - to 3MB I think. It was probably Hull Telecom or somesuch!I think he said the Upload was raised to 384K, As I understand it theres an infrastructure issue on BT exchanges that makes >256K a problem.Singapore et al. have 45MB as standard, don't they?Kristen |
