How about starting a survey about salary?

Salary versus expected weekly work hours per region.

Seems like you have chosen a very sensitive topic... most of the people will not be ready to disclose their salary range !

Mine too! But if the survey was anonymous?

I was just looking to see if my plans to move to the States is worth it. Some years ago I read a salary survey and found out that SQL developers in the States where paid twice as much I did then.

I make 121,000 Federation credits per year here at Starbase 5. My computer does all the work, and I spend all my time on the Holodeck posting answers about obsolete programming languages on simulated ancient web sites.

That didn't go to well...

Can someone post an URL to a site where salary surveys are found?
Like this one http://www.mcpmag.com/salarysurveys/article.asp?EditorialsID=60?

That's a currency rate to remember! Like Turkey's currency rate in the mid 90's...

Are you thinking of moving to the US for money reasons, or some other reason?

I think you will also need to take into account differences in benefits, taxes, cost of living, etc. to get the complete picture. The cost of living varies quite a bit in different parts of the US, and salary tends to follow that.

Also, take into account expenses that you may not have now that you would have in the US; it is not really practical in most places to live without a car.

Money and career. In Sweden, the general taxation is 50% !!

First of all, If i am employed, my employer pays me for example $3000 per month. On top of that, my employer must pay further $1000 to the goverment for "social benefits" such as road pavement, hospitals and so on.
With the $3000 I am given, I must pay at least $1000 as tax to goverment and local authorities.

So I have $2000 left. If I choose to put them in a bank for saving, I must pay 30% of the interest to the goverment.
When I later withdraw the money, to buy something I pay tax (currently 25% of almost everything except bus fares and cinemas which are 6% tax).

All included, there is a general rule that says we are taxed 50%. But that includes all social benefits such as pre-school, school, hospital, roads and so on.

I were in USA 2003. There I realized that my colleagues earned twice the salary I got. But the taxes were lower. And after their explanation of insurances and so on, they had 70% left of the gros. We have 50% left of the gros. With the example above, my collegues had 4200 dollar left after taxes, and I would have 2000. For almost the same job.

A rented apartment with ordinary standard cost about 30% of the net income every month, which in the example above is 600 dollar every month.
A gallon of fuel (95 octane) is today 7.7 dollar, 98 octane is 8.3 dollar.

Rockmoose will probably fill something in here...

Your numbers sound like a good argument for the US. Watch out for housing prices in the US. Some places have really outrageous housing prices and some are very reasonable. Also, not every place has public schools you would want to send your children to.

I guess the other thing is if you would actually like living in the US. How do you feel about footballs with points on the end?

Heavy Taxation here (in Sweden)!!!
The government takes every opportunity to rake money from the citizens.

Absolut Vodka ($45,9 / Liter)
Carlsberg Beer ($3.7 / Liter)
California Red Wine ($7,7 / Liter)

I think gas prices are way too low in the US, it's too cheap to disrupt the global ecosystem there.

We're working on it.

Isn't the real price difference in gas TAXES, not in the price of the gas itself?

Yes the price difference is mostly TAX.
First there is energy TAX, then on top of that there is consumer TAX,
so they are even TAXing the TAX

Please do...

I'm not sure how increasing gas taxes in the US is going to make things better, especially considering how much you love them.

Seems to just give the government a big pile of cash to waste, and a powerful incentive for corrupt lobbyists to fight over it like sharks on chum.

So True...

another thing to consider is vacation time. US jobs typically sucks compared to Europe. 10-15 days a year is pretty normal for the first 2 years at a company. Of course if you're a contractor or work for a contractor that can be better for time off. But on the other hand you may not be paid for your time off if you're contractor and if you work for one you may not feel free to take all the time that is "officially" offered. US has it's head up its @ss when it comes to life priorities. At least here in the DC area.

Can I just say OUCH about those Swedish Tax rate..
That is criminal! They could at least give the citizens cheap booze to cry into after a hard days work.....

How about Australia, Peso?

Lower tax rates, similar public benefits (hospital, schools) etc..
Millions of acres to choose from...

And there a plenty of IT jobs... We have been "importing" IT skills for about 10 years now...

You might not get filthy rich, but you'll have fun trying..

Government loves taxes.
I am not suggesting that you should make yours higher,
last thing I would want is to see more cash in the hands of the madmen in the whitehouse.

Lets all be responsible and take the bike or telecommute...
